Summer in the Red River Gorge

Updated October 22, 2026. Spring and fall are prime time in the Red. In summer, heat and humidity make conditions less than ideal, and sticky rock makes hard routes feel harder. You can still climb in summer if you plan around the weather.
Climbing in the heat
Start early. The coolest, driest hours are right after sunrise.
Chase shade. Pick walls that stay out of the sun at the time you plan to climb. Recent comments on Mountain Project are the best way to check.
Carry more water than you think. There is no water at most crags.
Watch for storms. Summer afternoons often bring thunderstorms. Wet sandstone is weaker, so give the rock time to dry after rain.
