Spring wildflowers in the Red River Gorge

Updated October 22, 2026. The Red River Gorge has some of the best spring wildflower displays in Kentucky. The season starts in late March or early April and keeps going into fall, but spring is the big show.
When to go
Early spring flowers show up in late March and early April. The peak usually comes around mid-April, which is when the Kentucky Native Plant Society holds its Wildflower Weekend at Natural Bridge. Mountain laurel and great laurel follow in late spring and early summer. Every year is a little different, so watch the weather. A warm March brings everything earlier.
What you might see
The Forest Service's Rock Bridge Trail page lists pink lady's-slipper, dwarf iris and trailing arbutus on the upland slopes. On a mid-April field trip along Hell Creek in Lee County, the Kentucky Native Plant Society found red trillium and showy orchis.
Where to look
Rock Bridge Trail: a loop in the southeast corner of the Geological Area, past a rock arch over a creek. The Forest Service features it as a wildflower viewing area.
Natural Bridge State Resort Park: home base for the Wildflower Weekend, with guided hikes across the park.
Wildflower Weekend
The Kentucky Native Plant Society's Wildflower Weekend has run for 40 years at Natural Bridge, with dozens of guided hikes led by botanists. In 2026 it ran April 17 to 19. Watch the society's site for the 2027 dates.
Leave them for the next person
Photograph wildflowers and leave them where they are. Stay on the trail, since many spring plants take years to recover once they are trampled.
