Hiking the Red

A stone trail through the woods

Indian Staircase is one of the best known scrambles in the Red River Gorge. It is in the Clifty Wilderness of the Daniel Boone National Forest.

What to expect

The route climbs a steep sandstone slab using small steps worn into the rock. It is a scramble with real exposure, and it is not a maintained trail. The rock is slick when wet, and people have been seriously hurt here.

Before you go

Go only in dry weather, wear shoes with good grip, and turn around if you are not comfortable. Bring a map, since cell service in the wilderness is unreliable. Check the Daniel Boone National Forest site for current alerts.

Easier views nearby

If the scramble is not for you, Sky Bridge and Natural Bridge both have short, maintained trails with big views.
